Jeremy McGovern referred to concussion panel as AFL future hangs in the balance

The 33-year-old may never play again.

The immediate playing future of West Coast veteran Jeremy McGovern is in considerable doubt after he was referred to the AFL’s concussion panel.

The 33-year-old five-time All-Australian was injured in a marking contest in the game against Melbourne on May 3 and placed in concussion protocols.

Seventeen days since that head knock, McGovern remains in the protocols, with his symptoms not improving.

McGovern has had a series of concussions throughout his career, which has prompted the club to escalate the situation to the AFL’s independent panel.

“Jeremy’s health and wellbeing is our number one priority, and he has not currently advanced through the concussion protocols due to ongoing symptoms,” general manager of football Gavin Bell said.

“Jeremy has suffered multiple concussions over his career, which adds complexity to his situation and his recovery. Our club doctors, in conjunction with the AFL Chief Medical Officer, have recommended referral to the AFL Concussion Panel to help inform a safe way forward in the interest of his current and future welfare.”

The club are awaiting a date for the panel to assess McGovern and there are a range of outcomes that could come as a result, including retirement.

Collingwood pair Nathan Murphy and Josh Carmichael, Melbourne fan-favourite Angus Brayshaw and young Bulldog Aidan O’Driscoll have all been forced into medical retirement, along with former Eagles Daniel Venables and Brad Sheppard.

“We are awaiting a date for the panel to convene and assess Jeremy, and there are a range of outcomes that could result from their report,” Bell continued.

“These may include personalised treatment or rehabilitation plans, an extension of the return-to-play timeframe, recommendations for further tests or specialist referrals, or retirement on medical grounds.

“The club requests Jeremy’s privacy is respected at this time while this confidential process unfolds.

“The club will provide a further update in due course.”

McGovern has played 197 games for the Eagles since arriving at the club via the rookie draft.

The fan favourite was a member of the 2018 premiership side and made five All-Australian teams to underline his status as one of the great defenders of the modern era.
