A local family-owned bakery has stolen the show with a delicious entry crowned Australia’s best sausage roll.
Whittlesea Bakehouse in Victoria, about 40km northeast of Melbourne, took out the coveted award on its first entry into the South Australian Baking Show.
“It’s pretty surreal, it’s hard to explain, we’re still in shock,” manager Adrian Caporetto said.

The bakehouse was opened in 1979 and has continued operating as a bakery since Caporetto’s mother-in-law purchased the business.
“It’s been in the family for over 30 years, and hopefully it’s going to keep on going,” he said.
“It’s just a little family-run business, we have a nice little community network going here.”
Caporetto said he flew to South Australia carrying only a small cooler box with his sausage rolls and a pasty.
“I didn’t bring anything else on the plane,” he said with a laugh.
“I thought, maybe I should have brought some more (selections) but then I thought it’s better to just concentrate on a few things.”

The decision paid off with both bakery goods securing wins.
The pasty took out third place in its category, before the dizzying high of the sausage roll win.
“I would have been happy with a top 10 finish, but when they called us I’m like ‘OK this is happening’.”
In March, Whittlesea Bakehouse also won the best sausage roll in Victoria at the Victorian Baking Show.
“What better than to back it up with now Australia’s best? We’re pretty ecstatic,” Caporetto said.
“The recognition is crazy, knowing you’re on the right track and that you’re on par with the best, and knowing that, in the judge’s eyes, it’s spot on.”

When asked what customers love so much about their sausage rolls, Caporetto said sometimes simple is best.
“It’s a traditional beef sausage roll with buttery pastry, packed full of flavour with onion, carrot and salt and pepper, very simple,” he said.
“I’ve been told by the judges that the flavour was spot on.”
Caporetto recommends his sausage roll is best served plain to fully appreciate the flavour.
“I don’t think it needs sauce, but some people love sauce,” he said.
“Some people have BBQ sauce, I even have one customer who has it with mayonnaise on top. Each to their own I guess.”
Other fan favourites at the Whittlesea Bakehouse include the collection of sweet treats.
“You have to have a doughnut and a vanilla slice, can’t go wrong with a bit of sweetness after a bit of savoury,” Caporetto said.
