A 41-year-old driver had to be carefully cut free from the cab of his vehicle.

A truck driver has been killed in a devastating crash with a freight train.

The 41-year-old suffered critical injuries when his Volvo truck collided with the train at a railway crossing on Hopkinson Rd near Bishop Road in Cardup, a suburb of Perth’s outer southeast, just before 1pm on Monday.

Firefighters had to carefully free the driver from the cab of his vehicle before he was rushed to Armadale Hospital.

Sadly, there was nothing doctors could do and he died, police said.

Rail freight operator Aurizon said its crew were shaken in the incident but not hurt.

WA Police’s Major Crash unit is now investigating and has appealed for information.
