The 46-year-old is accused of committing the act mid-game.

A father accused of choking an 11-year-old boy during a junior soccer match last month has appeared in court.

Police allege 46-year-old Steven James Naoum approached the child and grabbed him around the neck during play at Abbeville Park in Mindarie, Perth, on May 25.

The accused, from Watermans Bay, was arrested and charged with impeding another person’s normal breathing or blood circulation by applying pressure to the neck.

The child, from the Mindarie Football Club, was not seriously injured and did not require medical treatment.

Naoum, a parent of a junior player from the opposing team, Whitford City Football Club, made a brief appearance in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Friday.

He spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charge.

Naoum was not required to enter a plea and his matter will again go before the court in late July.

Whitfords City FC has banned the father from club activities “pending the outcome of legal proceedings”.
