Family’s ‘miracle’ escape jumping from two-storey Melbourne home engulfed by flames

Five people were trapped upstairs as fire spread from the ground floor.

A family have jumped from a second-storey balcony and garage rooftop as fire engulfed their home overnight.

Five people were trapped upstairs when the fire broke out and quickly spread through the ground floor of the house in Bentleigh East, in suburban Melbourne, between 11pm and midnight on Wednesday.

According to 7NEWS Melbourne, four people jumped from the roof, including the mother of the house, two daughters and one of their boyfriends. The father of the home ran downstairs to fight the blaze.

A 17-year-old passed out due to smoke inhalation and fell from the roof. The boyfriend jumped from the roof holding the family dog, which survived.

The family sold the house just three weeks ago and have been subleasing from the new owners. The fire possibly started from a massage chair, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Witnesses reported seeing residents jumping from a garage roof into a tree while they tried to get a ladder to others on the second-floor balcony.

A young woman, believed to be in her 20s, jumped from the balcony and has been taken to hospital with lower leg and hip injuries.

On Thursday, Sunrise reporter Andrew McCormack was at the home and said the family had “an incredible escape”.

“Firefighters are calling it a miracle they made it out of their home alive. It’s been completely gutted by fire,” he said.

“Not one but three people jumped from the roof of the garage, on to a tree here, between 11pm and midnight last night to flee the flames.

“This house was engulfed. It took an hour for firefighters to get it under control.”

The cause of the blaze is still unknown.

Next-door neighbour Christine told McCormack that she and her husband were woken by the family’s screams.

“I heard screaming in the street. I thought it was hooligans at first,” Christine said.

“Then the screams were getting more intense — ‘help, help’ — and I look out the window and I see my neighbours on the garage roof trying to get down off the roof.

“The two daughters were on the roof ... on the balcony, plus ... one of the daughter’s partners. They ... all jumped, because we couldn’t get the ladder to them.

“One of the girls, I think, broke her foot. The young one. They jumped on the tree and fell straight down.”

McCormack said: “One of those daughters is in hospital along with another woman as well, believed to be the mum of this family.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
