Broncos in ‘meltdown’ over Martin Taupau’s decision to like an Instagram post criticising coach Michael Maguire

The 35-year-old’s NRL future hangs in the balance after the social media storm.

The Brisbane Broncos are reportedly in “meltdown” after veteran prop Martin Taupau liked an Instagram post that criticised coach Michael Maguire.

Taupau will front the leadership group to explain his actions and may have played his final game for the club.

The 35-year-old is off contract at the end of the year and appears unlikely to be offered a new deal.

He will likely face ramifications for his social media activity that has reportedly left club officials furious.

Former New Zealand international Elijah Taylor, who played under Maguire at the Wests Tigers during his 186-game NRL career, criticised the coach in a scathing video post on Instagram.

“A lot of people are asking me what’s wrong with Madge (Maguire) and what’s wrong with the Broncos,” Taylor said.

“One, it’s his intensity. I’ve never seen a coach ride the game so hard.

“After a win the world is a better place. After a loss you’re off to a funeral and someone will be getting cooked at the video session.

“Two, training methods. Ninety-five per cent of the time on the field it’s full contact. You haven’t done an NRL pre-season until you have done a Michael Maguire pre-season.

“Three, time efficiency. Let’s have a meeting for a meeting for a meeting. I’d get home from training and the kids don’t know who I am any more.”

Taupau publicly explained his actions on Thursday night.

“Today I liked a video by Elijah Taylor talking about Michael Maguire’s coaching methods,” he wrote.

“I regret this as it was not my intention to endorse the video. I removed the like immediately after.

“I want to make it clear, I am thoroughly enjoying being coached by Michael Maguire and will continue to do whatever I can to help the Broncos win a premiership in 2025.”

Taupau has played just one game so far this year, coming off the bench against the Roosters in Round 6.

The veteran appears unlikely to add to his 256-game tally in the wake of the social media storm.

NRL reporter Ben Dobbin said the club were “filthy” with Taupau’s actions.

“The club’s gone into meltdown,” he said on Triple M.

“They’re absolutely filthy. They are extremely disappointed. They hate to be put into this situation and they’re trying to change the culture.

“They will be meeting with the player in the coming days and there will be ramifications.”

“They are absolutely furious about the fact he’s liked this. The senior playing group are unhappy.”
