The announcement was confirmed in a statement from the White House a short time after.

A US official said six B-2 bombers had dropped a dozen 30,000-pound (1.3 tonnes) bunker buster bombs on the Fordo nuclear site, which lies deep underground and Navy submarines fired 30 TLAM cruise missiles at the Natanz and Isfahan sites.

One B-2 also dropped two bunker busters on Natanz, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

Trump addressed the nation from the White House at 10pm local time, saying the mission had been a “spectacular success”.

Strikes had “completely and totally obliterated” the Iranian nuclear facilities, the US president added.

Trump called Iran the “bully of the Middle East” and said the only option for the nation now was to make peace.

“If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier,” he said.

“For 40 years, Iran has been saying, ‘Death to America, death to Israel.’

“They’ve been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs.”

Trump said the objective of the US attack was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear-enrichment capability and to stop the “world’s number one state sponsor of terror”.

He “thanked and congratulated” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before,” Trump said.

“And we’ve gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel.”

Trump said he was hopeful the US military would no longer be required for further strikes, but that there were “many targets” remaining.

Trump ended the address by asking God to protect the US military.

“We love you, God, and we love our great military. Protect them,” he said.

“God bless the Middle East, God bless Israel and God bless America. Thank you very much.”

Netanyahu also appeared on Israeli TV to praise the US strikes on Iran, calling Trump’s decision a “bold” one that will “change history”.

“In tonight’s action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, America has been truly unsurpassed. It has done what no other country on earth could do,” he said.

“History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world’s most dangerous regime, the world’s most dangerous weapons.

“His leadership today has created a pivot of history that can help lead the Middle East and beyond to a future of prosperity and peace.

“God bless America. God bless Israel and may God bless our unshakeable alliance, our unbreakable faith.”

The Australian Government echoed Trump’s’ calls for peace.

“We have been clear that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program has been a threat to international peace and security,” a government spokesperson said.

“We note the US President’s statement that now is the time for peace.

“The security situation in the region is highly volatile. We continue to call for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy.

“Australians in Israel and Iran and the region should continue to monitor public safety information provided by local authorities, including to shelter in place when required.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be communicating directly with registered Australians about preparations for assisted departures.”
